“I have spent my life trying to understand the function of remembering, which is not the opposite of forgetting, but rather its innerlining. We don't remember. We rewrite. Memory much as history is rewritten. How can one remember thirst?” – Sans Soleil, Chris Marker, 1983.
Today, more images are being captured than there are eyes to perceive them. The toolkits for architectural practice inevitably transform themselves, striving for new forms of production and reception, transcending beyond representational quality of the image. Adieu à l'image aims to introduce an experimental coordinate system for theoretical and practical re-calibration of the relationship between spaces and images, arguably, two of the most fundamental concepts for architectural discourse. The workshop constitutes a testing ground for ways to unsettle habituated modes of seeing, embracing the territory of essayistic approach towards the moving images and their performative capacity to resensitize the act of looking itself. Virtual environments evolve as hybrid construction sites, where constellations of artifacts can be collectively choreographed across multiple timelines: writing scores and scripting differences through spiraling variations allow for rehearsing critical perspectives. Together we will explore a shift from depiction of spaces via conventional means to a mode of inscribing spatial qualities into the images themselves. In other words, by utilizing various techniques for poetic estrangement, ranging from 3D-scanning and camera projection, to tracking and animation pipelines as part of the game-engine infrastructures, we will conceive of images as spaces, by challenging notions of scale, time, and narrative.
dband – collective for spatial narratives and audiovisual choreography operates in a collaborative mode, having expertise in theater- and film production, stage- and exhibition design, music/sound, computer graphics and animation. Even though the partakers might vary depending on the project, the core members all share a background in architecture, an enthusiasm for proactive critical approach and a social engagement through spatial practices. dband offers technical support in design and implementation of artistic projects, in addition to conducting own performative multimedia work as a collective, while their methods oscillate between scales of architecture, exhibition-space, scenography and miniature-models, using analogue andvirtual production.
