Tools of Exhibition Making

#curating #exhibitionmaking #architecturalpractice

The workshop is aimed at individuals interested in exploring the complex processes behind
organising and setting up exhibitions, and the ways in which architecture and exhibition
making are intertwined. Throughout the workshop, we will explore the toolkit commonly
used in architectural practice and adapt it to address the specific needs and challenges of
exhibition-making. Understanding and documenting exhibition contexts — with attention to their various components such as spatial plans, lighting, display systems, and printed matter, and how these elements interact with the presented materials — will be at the core of the workshop. Practical skills at the intersection of architecture and exhibition production — including analog and digital drawing, spatial arrangement, graphic design, photography, and the development of printed materials — will be explored and expanded.
After an introduction to the history and broader context of exhibition-making, participants
will conduct field research and analyse various exhibition settings and their components.
These case studies will be presented and reflected upon collectively, forming the foundation for the development of a 1:1 exhibition that showcases the materials and discussions generated throughout the workshop. A key focus of this process will be the spatial arrangement of materials, alongside approaches to moderation and documentation. This includes writing work descriptions and exhibition texts, designing floor plans, assembling press kits, and producing printed materials or small catalogues — all essential elements in the  spatial organisation and overall success of any exhibition.
