Architectural photography is closely linked to the representation and marketing of architecture. Since the invention of photography, this medium has established itself as an indispensable tool for depicting buildings - but it often serves to idealize building projects rather than to depict reality.

In this workshop, we will explore our subjective perception of architecture, with photography acting as a tool for questioning, rather than reinforcing, these dominant ways of seeing architecture. Our aim is to counter the conventional use of architectural photography with a playful, critical approach that depicts everyday urban life and the reality of the built environment. The intention is to question norms and to understand architecture not only as a product, but as a living part of an urban context. We will explore the possibilities of photography in a hands-on way, experimenting with spatial interventions, building models, discussing in the group as well as learning about image theory.

At the end of the workshop, the participants will present their work in a joint exhibition. The form of the presentation and the display for the individually created photos will be developed together in the group.

At the centre of Bianca Pedrina’s work is the investigation and documentation of architecture and urban spaces; a study of sorts that poses questions about the economic, historical, and social conditions of built space. Unlike traditional architectural photography, she does not seek the well-planned and preserved, but rather that which has been haphazardly transformed by man and nature. Where many may see only a loss of quality, Pedrina uncovers the possibility of anarchy, higher justice, and humour. Bianca Pedrina studied fine arts at the HKB Bern and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. She has received awards from the Cristina Spoerri Foundation, the UBS Cultural Foundation, the Riehen Art Prize and the Austrian State Scholarship, and has held residencies in Paris, Seoul, Glasgow, Shanghai and Taipei. In addition to her own artistic practice, she is active in curatorial projects.
