dérive has been dedicated to analysing urban society and urban space for 25 years. It shares knowledge from urban research, art and activism, is committed to the democratisation of urban society and strengthening the critical public sphere. The presentation will introduce some of the key issuses of this engagement.

dérive – Verein für Stadtforschung was established in Vienna in 2000 as an independent and interdisciplinary network focusing on critical urban research. dérive shares knowledge from the fields of urban research, art and activism. It is committed to the democratisation of urban society, and strengthening the critical public sphere.
Since 2000, dérive publishes the international magazine dérive - Zeitschrift für Stadtforschung, produces a radio format and podcast on urban space (dérive – Radio für Stadtforschung, since 2011), and organizes the annual festival urbanize! Int. Festival for Urban Explorations (since 2010), which aims to foster interdisciplinary knowledge transfer and the exchange of ideas, as well as encouraging multi-perspective thinking and collective debate on current urban issues.

Elke Rauth is chairwoman of dérive – Verein für Stadtforschung, director and co-curator of the urbanize! festival and editor of the magazine dérive.
Christoph Laimer is founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine dérive, as well as co-curator of urbanize!.
Elke and Christoph are urban activists, members of INURA (International Network for Urban Research and Action) and are involved in habiTAT (the Austrian Mietshäuser Syndikat).
