Photography as a Tool for Research

In her lecture, Zara Pfeifer discusses photography as a tool for research and as a way of engaging with architecture, infrastructure, and social space. Through long-term photographic projects developed in Vienna, Berlin, New York, and Los Angeles, she reflects on how images can document everyday realities, explore social structures, and create new forms of understanding between people and the built environment. The lecture offers insight into her working process, including on-site presence, observation, interviews, and spatial research.
Zara Pfeifer Zara Pfeifer ist an artist based in Berlin and Vienna. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and the 2025 Architecture Biennale in Venice. Her publications include Monocle, ZEITmagazin, and Monopol. She received an artist residency grant from the Austrian Federal Government at ISCP New York and is a 2025/26 fellow of the MAK Schindler Scholarship in Los Angeles. Pfeifer studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and photography at the Friedl Kubelka School for Artistic Photography. Since 2019, she has been teaching photography research seminars at TU Vienna and at universities across Europe.
