The 2026 Vienna Architecture Summer School excursion takes participants to the Atomic Power Plant Zwentendorf, one of Europe’s most extraordinary technological landmarks.
Completed in 1978 but never activated following a nationwide referendum, Zwentendorf remains the world’s only fully built commercial nuclear power plant that never produced electricity.
During a guided tour, participants will explore the reactor hall, turbine hall, containment structures, and the preserved control room, offering a rare opportunity to experience the spatial, technical, and political dimensions of late-modern industrial architecture. Frozen in the aesthetics and engineering ambitions of the 1970s, the facility serves as a powerful case study questioning the relationship between architecture, infrastructure, energypolicy, and democratic decision-making.
Next to the atomic plant the 200-year-old Bärndorfer-Hut, dismantled in the Austrian Alps and rebuilt at the Danube River, will serve as a contrasting refreshment stop overlooking one of Europe's biggest rivers.
