Otto Wagner Areal
Areal Exploration with VAS²
Saturday, August 30th, 2.30pm.
The Vienna Architecture Summer School 2025 will be hosted at the Otto Wagner Areal, one of the city’s most remarkable architectural ensembles. Designed almost 120 years ago, Otto Wagner’s project reflects a vision of dignity, functionality, and urban foresight that remains relevant today.
After more than a century of clinical use, the City of Vienna is now guiding the OWA into a new future: a sustainable, climate-conscious urban landscape that balances heritage preservation, cultural memory, and contemporary innovation.
As both the setting and the context of our workshops, the Otto Wagner Areal offers a unique opportunity to explore questions of adaptive reuse, spatial transformation, and societal, historical and cultural development within the urban fabric. The summer school will open with a site excursion introducing participants to the architectural, historical, and spatial qualities of the complex—establishing the context for our collective investigations throughout the program.
